This video walks you through a composition sent in by one of my students who is taking part in my "Compose a Melody for Instruments" video course. More details about the course here: http://www.mymusictheory.com/downloads This composition example highlights some of the most common errors made by grade 5 music theory candidates. We look at the notation used, in particular how the rhythm and note values relate to the time signature of the composition, as well as some details about beaming quick notes such as semiquavers (16th notes) with a dotted note. We also look at cadences and how they should be approached in the minor key, using a dominant chord and an imperfect cadence.
